Tessellation is a study on a design process through abstraction and a translation from a two dimensional image to a three dimensional structure. It plays with the relationship between solid and void to lift layers of complexity from patterns. The study begins with a series of photographs which are abstracted to two dimensional patterns and recombined to generate a tiling system. The fractal nature of the patterns allow the tiling system to make a transition over multiple scales. Finally the two dimensional research was translated to a three dimensional structure built at the scale of a pavilion.

. — The first task was to find a starting point which began with “Design” a photo in santral istanbul. With particular proportions the photo was deconstructed into elements that could be replicated and form an abstract composition.

— Translating the structural system into a relief composition with origami technics.

— Building units to create a pavilion

. — With the result the monochrome composition has been resized into three different units to build a new more complex composition.
